Description

HORSE RACING PLATE 1 DRAWN AND ETCHED BY SAMUEL HOWITT PUBLISHED APRIL 10th 1799.


Copper engraving with later hand colour. The image measures approx 17 x 12.5 cms with good borders. The plate is in very good condition with a good clear impression on thick paper. This is not a restrike but from the original British Sportsman published 1806.


Samuel Howitt (1756-1822) First exhibited at The Royal Acadamy in 1758 and went on to achieve great acclaim being compared to George Stubbs. He drew and etched scenes for several publications but is probably best known for his work for The British Sportsman.
